Auburn’s downtown is on its way to becoming a revitalized and active downtown with three goals in mind:
- Help existing business continue to be or become successful;
- Attract new business that Auburn wants in the places we want them, in the high density areas of our city and out of neighborhoods;
- Ease the tax burden on citizens.
With the new construction currently underway, it is expected that the generation of new sales and property taxes will help pay for Auburn’s City services and bring in revenues of about $150 million over a 30-year period.
The development is taking place in a 6-block area, of which two are nearing completion. The City has worked for the past five years to assemble key properties in order to attract developer interest. There is currently a master developer agreement in place with Alpert International and the recent signing of SB 5045 by Governor Gregoire is expected to bring $250,000 year for 25 years to Auburn to go towards Auburns downtown redevelopment.
In addition, the Economic Development Administration (EDA) is reviewing the City of Auburn’s application for funding for infrastructural street improvements along Division St. The amount of the grant will be $3 million. It is anticipated the grant will be awarded in March 2010.
